What to Eat and Avoid on the Keto Diet
The most common question about the keto diet is: "What am I going to eat?" The answer is actually quite broad — only carb sources are removed, and almost everything else is allowed.
✅ Foods You Can Eat Freely
- Meat: Beef, lamb, chicken (with skin), turkey, bacon, sausage (unsweetened)
- Fish & Seafood: Salmon, mackerel, tuna, sea bass, shrimp
- Eggs: Cooked any way you like
- Leafy Greens: Arugula, spinach, lettuce, parsley, dill
- Cruciferous & Squash Veggies: Zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, peppers (in moderation)
- Fats: Olive oil, butter, coconut oil, avocado oil
- Nuts: Almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts (in small amounts)
❌ Strictly Forbidden
- Bread, rice, pasta, bulgur, all grains
- Sugar, honey, molasses, all sweets
- Fruit juice, soda, alcohol (beer especially)
- Potatoes, corn, peas, carrots (high starch)
- Ready-made sauces, ketchup, packaged snacks
⚠️ Consume with Caution
- Legumes: once a week, small amounts (lentils, chickpeas)
- Tomatoes: limit to half a tomato per day
- Onion, garlic: contain a small amount of carbs, use in moderation
- Dairy: cream and butter are freely allowed; cheese in moderation
Get in the habit of reading labels when grocery shopping. Even products labeled "sugar-free" can contain hidden carbs.
