What Time Should You Break Your Fast on Intermittent Fasting? IF Meal Timing
The question that confuses IF practitioners the most: "When do I have breakfast?" In reality, the concept of a traditional breakfast changes a bit under IF. Here's a clear guide.
Meal Timing on the 16:8 Protocol
The 16:8 protocol means 16 hours fasting, 8-hour eating window. The most commonly used schedules:
- 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM window: First meal at noon. The most popular choice, fits well with social life.
- 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM window: First meal at 1 PM. Covers dinner too.
- 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM window: First meal at 10 AM. Good for early sleepers.
- 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM window: A balanced middle ground. Ideal for most people.
Meal Timing on the 18:6 Protocol
18 hours fasting, 6-hour eating window. A shorter eating period:
- 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM window: 2 meals a day. Lunch + early dinner.
- 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM window: Ends at 7 PM, giving you time to unwind before bed.
So What Can You Drink on an Empty Stomach in the Morning?
During your fasting window (the hours you're not eating), the following won't break your fast:
- Water — as much as you like
- Plain black coffee (no milk, no sugar)
- Plain herbal tea (no sweetener)
- Electrolyte powder (sugar-free versions)
What Should Your First Meal Be?
Don't think of your first meal on IF as "breakfast." It should be protein-heavy and satisfying. Start your day with eggs, meat, or cheese. Carb-heavy "breakfast" foods will kick you out of ketosis.
How Long Does It Take to Adjust to IF?
Most people adapt to IF hours within 1–2 weeks. You may feel hungry in the mornings for the first few days — black coffee makes this transition easier. From week 2 onward, you'll stop feeling hungry in the mornings.
