How Does the Keto Diet Affect Your Blood Test Results?
Your blood values start changing once you start keto. Some values improve quickly, while others may temporarily rise. Managing this period correctly requires knowing which values to watch.
1. Blood Sugar (Fasting Glucose)
This is where keto's fastest effect shows up. Fasting glucose drops noticeably within the first 2 weeks. Diabetic or prediabetic individuals should consult their doctor to adjust medication dosage.
2. Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR)
Keto is one of the most effective diets for reducing insulin resistance. With 30 days of adherence, a 20β40% drop in HOMA-IR is observed.
3. Cholesterol Panel
- LDL: Rises in some people. Check particle size β large LDL particles are low-risk
- HDL: Usually rises noticeably β this is good
- Triglycerides: The fastest-dropping value. A 30β50% drop in month 1 is normal
4. Uric Acid
A temporary rise (gout risk) may occur in the first 4β6 weeks. Drinking plenty of water and reducing processed meat intake minimizes this risk.
When Should You Get Tested?
- Before starting: record your baseline values
- At the end of month 1: track early changes
- At the end of month 3: full adaptation assessment
- 6 months and 1 year: long-term health tracking
5. Ferritin and Thyroid (TSH)
These two are often left off the panel. If ferritin is already borderline low or thyroid function is subclinical when you start, symptoms that show up a few months in β fatigue or hair loss β can get wrongly blamed on keto alone. Adding both to your baseline bloodwork lets you actually tell the causes apart.
